This week in First Grade 10/16-20


It's a great week in first grade! Here's an overview of what your scholars will be learning this week: 

 ELA-Our story for this week is  “Gus Takes a Train." Our objective for the week is to use sequencing and adjectives in our writing. We will be writing about how to carve a pumpkin using the words "first, next, and last." New reading logs were sent home today.  The spelling test will be given on Thursday this week!

Math: We are finishing up Chapter 2 in Math this week.  Student's will be taking their test on Wednesday.  Help your scholar by checking their math homework that they complete on Tuesday.


Science: We are working on a habitat project in class.  Scholars will be working a drafting their project this week, and together we will pick the best habitat for them to use for their final project! Scholars will be focusing on the an animal in a specific habitat, and illustrating how the animal is getting what it needs to survive in that habitat. 

Social Studies: -Scholars will be taking their social studies assessment this week over Chapter 1 on Wednesday.  You may review the topics with your child on Brain Pop Jr.

Health: No Health lesson this week.

Friday, Oct. 20: No school for scholars.  

Picture Day: October 23, 2017

Anti-Bullying Day: October 25, 2017 (Scholars will wear orange tops & uniform pants/shoes)  

Character Parade: On October 31st scholars will be allowed to dress as their favorite character from a book.  All scholars who dress up must bring the book to school with them.  Scholars will showcase their costumes in a parade in the parking lot circle. Scholars will exit from the front doors and walk to the circle under the direction of their teachers. They will walk around the circle three times as staff and parents look on and admire their costumes. Those who are in uniform will walk with the scholars in costumes. Time: 9:00 a.m. 


We are still waiting for approval for our field trip to the pumpkin patch! Our tentative date is Thursday, October 26th.  It is not approved and is subject to change, but we wanted to provide you with the date we are currently working on.

It's a great week in first grade! Here's an overview of what your scholars will be learning this week: 

 ELA-Our story for this week is  “Lucia's Neighborhood” Our objective is to use text and graphic features to find information. Reading logs were sent home today.  Please turn them in next Monday.  Reading logs will always be sent home and collected from the previous week on Mondays. If your child does not turn in their reading log on Monday, they will not receive a homework point on Dojo and will not receive credit for the assignment.  Reading logs will not be accepted late.

Math: Solve subtraction problems and equations

Social Studies: -My government: Identify and describe community, state, and national government
-Symbols of my country 

Health: I can find healthy ways to deal with anger.

Reading logs were sent home today.  Please turn them in next Monday.  Reading logs will always be sent home and collected from the previous week on Mondays. If your child does not turn in their reading log on Monday, they will not receive a homework point on Dojo and will not receive credit for the assignment.  Reading logs will not be accepted late.

                                  -Communities: urban, suburban, rural
                                  - Learning how to solve conflicts 

Important date: Friday, Sept. 29- 2 -hour early dismissal for students

STAR TESTING ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY

Imagine Andrews uses STAR testing to determine how much each student has advanced during the school year.  Our goal is for students to achieve learning gains at one year's growth and strive for more significant gains when they are below grade level.

Beginning on Monday, September 18th, we will begin our Fall administration of STAR Computer Adaptive Test.  Students will be testing for math on Monday morning, and students will take their reading test on Tuesday morning. We will test for about 30 minutes for math and for reading.

Please have your scholar eat a big breakfast on Monday AND Tuesday, and come to school well rested and ready to do their best! :)

Permissions slips will be sent out tomorrow.  Please send them back ASAP!

***Please send your child with a cold lunch on Friday.***
